Advice for children and families on neuro-orthopaedic therapy and care at HOME4MOTION
Our approach

Interdisciplinary neuro-orthopaedics at the highest level

At Neuro-orthopaedics, Dr Martin Švehlík (consultant orthopaedic surgeon, specialised in neuro-orthopaedics) and the HOME4MOTION Kids therapy team work hand in hand. Together they develop an overall plan that takes every aspect of the condition into account. The individual therapy plan contains not only therapy goals but also recommendations on assistive devices, orthoses, botulinum toxin therapy and, where necessary, surgery. All coordinated, all from one place.
Good neuro-orthopaedics is not a single event — it is an ongoing conversation between doctor, therapists, child and parents.

Häufige Fragen

Was Sie wissen möchten

What exactly does Dr Švehlík do at Neuro-orthopaedics?▾
Dr Martin Švehlík is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in neuro-orthopaedics in children. He carries out gait analyses, plans the provision of assistive devices and orthoses, coordinates botulinum toxin therapy and, where necessary, plans surgery. He works closely with our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy team.
What is a gait analysis, and what does it give our child?▾
A 3D gait analysis measures joint angles, forces and muscle activity during walking, using cameras, force plates and electrodes. The result shows precisely which muscles are working too hard or too little, and where intervention will achieve most. It is the basis for precise planning of therapy and of any surgery.
From what age does botulinum toxin make sense for children with cerebral palsy?▾
Botulinum toxin in cerebral palsy is usually used from the age of two to three, when spasticity is holding back the development of movement or contractures are a risk. Dr Švehlík makes the decision together with the therapy team and the parents. What is decisive: intensive therapy must follow immediately afterwards for the best effect.
When does surgery make sense in cerebral palsy or spina bifida?▾
Surgery makes sense when conservative therapy is not enough: with severe contractures, hip dislocation, scoliosis, or where tendon lengthening would clearly improve the quality of walking. Dr Švehlík decides on the evidence, using gait analysis data, and together with the family.
