Voice therapy and facial palsy in children — building voice and expression

Has your child been hoarse for weeks, sounding rough or strained, going quiet quickly or constantly straining their voice? We build the voice back up – and also treat facial palsy. Sensitively, in a child-friendly way, in Graz and Vienna.

Our approach

Hoarse voice, vocal nodules, facial palsy

The most common cause of hoarseness in children is not an illness but simply too much strain: a lot of shouting, speaking loudly at kindergarten, calling out over background noise. This often leads to vocal nodules (“screamer's nodules”) – the voice then sounds permanently rough, hoarse or strained and gives way under effort. If hoarseness lasts longer than three weeks, the voice should be examined by a specialist; after that, voice therapy is in most cases the decisive step.

Therapy is not about sparing the voice but about using it better: connecting breath and voice, using resonance, regulating volume without pressing. With children this works through singing, humming and sound games – not through prohibitions.

We also treat facial palsy, for example after birth trauma, operations or neurological conditions: with neuromuscular facilitation, targeted facial expression training and orofacial therapy.

A smile that comes back – that is more than therapeutic success. That is identity.

Treatment focus

What we support

Vocal strength, tone, facial expression and oral motor skills – child-friendly and individual.

🎶

Voice training & vocal strength

Building fullness of tone, carrying power and stamina – so that your child is heard without pressing. Also for vocal nodules.

😃

Facial expression

Laughing, frowning, blinking – we gradually train facial expression back up. The goal is a natural expression that doesn't feel like an exercise.

🤲

Neuromuscular facilitation

Targeted activation of weakened facial muscles – with massage techniques and active exercises. Used above all for facial palsy.

👄

Orofacial therapy

Lips, tongue, jaw, cheeks — building coordination and strength in oral motor function.

🫁

Breath support for the voice

Connecting breath and voice – for a stronger and more enduring voice that still carries at the end of the day.

📅

Intensive voice therapy

Daily sessions — for quick, visible improvement in voice and facial expression.

Häufige Fragen

Was Sie wissen möchten

What is facial nerve palsy, and how is it treated?▾
Facial nerve palsy arises from damage to the facial nerve — in children through birth trauma, neurological conditions or after surgery. Treatment combines neuromuscular facilitation, specific muscle exercises and biofeedback.
Can facial palsy in children recover completely?▾
With peripheral facial nerve palsy a full recovery is possible in many cases, particularly where therapy begins early. With central facial nerve palsy the outlook depends on the extent of the brain injury. In either case therapy can improve function considerably.
Our child has a hoarse voice — when is voice therapy needed?▾
If the hoarseness lasts longer than three weeks, an ENT specialist should first examine the vocal folds (laryngoscopy). After that, voice therapy is useful for many causes. We coordinate with the ENT specialist treating your child.
How do I explain to our child why the facial exercises matter?▾
We explain it in a way children understand and make it a game: "You are practising so you can grin again whenever you want!" Mirror games, pulling-faces competitions and pictures showing progress are strong motivators for children.
