Early intervention

Early intervention for neurological conditions

Early intervention is one of the most important steps after a diagnosis – the sooner your child receives targeted therapy, the greater the developmental possibilities. We support children from infancy with specialised paediatric early intervention: for cerebral palsy, developmental delay, trisomy 21, rare genetic conditions, spinal conditions, muscle diseases and many further diagnoses –even if your diagnosis is not explicitly listed here.

💙 PhysiotherapyThe Bobath concept, positioning and support for movement from the first months of life.
🍀 Occupational therapyBuilding fine motor skills, perception and everyday abilities through play.
🌸 Speech and language therapyLanguage development and swallowing — including support with feeding difficulties.

Frequently asked questions

What families ask us most often

Which therapy helps children with cerebral palsy most?▾
With cerebral palsy an interdisciplinary approach is decisive. Physiotherapy using Bobath and Vojta improves gait pattern, balance and muscle tone. Occupational therapy trains fine motor skills and everyday abilities. Speech and language therapy treats difficulties with speech and swallowing, which occur particularly with tetraparesis. After botulinum toxin injections or surgery, intensive therapy over one to three weeks is especially effective — it makes the most of the window of maximum neuroplasticity. HOME4MOTION Kids in Graz and Vienna specialises in therapy for cerebral palsy at every level of severity: hemiparesis, diparesis and tetraparesis.
How is spina bifida in children treated — physiotherapy, occupational therapy and assistive devices?▾
Children with spina bifida (myelomeningocele, MMC) and other spinal conditions need lifelong therapy matched to the level of the lesion. Physiotherapy supports the best possible mobility — walking, with a walking frame or by wheelchair — and prevents contractures. Occupational therapy trains transfers, wheelchair handling and everyday independence. Our neuro-orthopaedic consultant Dr Švehlík coordinates orthotic provision, gait analysis and support around surgery. During growth spurts and after operations such as a tethered cord release we recommend intensive therapy. HOME4MOTION Kids works with children who have spinal conditions and spina bifida in Graz and Vienna.
What physiotherapy and occupational therapy is there for children with muscular conditions such as SMA or muscular dystrophy?▾
For children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) or other myopathies, regular therapy is decisive in slowing the course of the condition and maintaining quality of life. Physiotherapy maintains mobility, prevents contractures and includes respiratory therapy where the condition is severe. Occupational therapy optimises everyday abilities and the provision of assistive devices — from wheelchairs to environmental control. After starting nusinersen (Spinraza) or risdiplam (Evrysdi) in SMA, intensive physiotherapy immediately afterwards is decisive in turning new muscle strength into real function. HOME4MOTION Kids works with children who have muscular conditions in Graz and Vienna.
What helps children with neurological conditions such as brain development disorders or encephalitis?▾
Children with neurological conditions — including disorders of brain development, perinatal brain injury, encephalitis or malformations of the brain — benefit most from interdisciplinary therapy that begins early and happens often. A child’s brain is especially adaptable in the first years of life: physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy activate new neural connections and build motor skills, language and thinking at the same time. The earlier therapy begins, the more developmental potential can be used. At HOME4MOTION Kids we work with children who have neurological conditions from infancy onwards, in Graz and Vienna.
Which therapy helps children with Down syndrome and other genetic conditions?▾
Children with Down syndrome (trisomy 21), fragile X syndrome, triple X or other chromosomal conditions benefit enormously from therapy that begins early. Physiotherapy addresses the low muscle tone that is typical, and builds trunk stability, balance and the development of walking — ideally from infancy. Occupational therapy strengthens fine motor skills and planning and prepares specifically for nursery and school. Speech and language therapy supports language development, articulation and swallowing — and where delay is severe, also through signing or picture communication. An intensive week before starting school can create a decisive head start. HOME4MOTION Kids works with children who have genetic conditions in Graz and Vienna.
